“Hey, it’s Carly, right?”
I looked down at the girl. She was sitting off to the side, all bundled up in a hoodie.
She grunted in reply.
“It’s Megan, remember? We met the other night when I, you know.” I couldn’t say what went down, exactly. I had sweared on the River Styx to not tell anything about the Greek camp.
“Yeah.”
She seemed about like I remembered: moody and put out. I sat down next to her.
“Do you like it here? Is it better than Australia?”
She could tell that I wouldn’t stop pestering her, so she finally gave in and conversed with me. “It was alright, but I didn’t like living with my mother. I don’t know a lot of people here yet. What about you? Have you traveled around a lot?”
I shook my head. “No, following Percy Jackson and friends across country was my first time out of California. I might travel around after my legion years are over. I haven’t decided yet.” My arm guards were in my backpack, so I kept rubbing my mark: SPQR, a symbol close to a caduceus, and six bars.
We sat for a moment and watched the Greeks and Romans frolicking together. The stars shone brightly behind them.
“So, I guess you’ll be headed back to Camp Jupiter soon?”
It was my turn for very few words. “Yeah, I guess. It’s not like I can abandon my duties.”
“Or that boyfriend of yours.”
I couldn’t help but blush.
“Don’t even try to deny it. That boy needs help, and you seem to be able to do something right.”
I nodded. “I talked him into not attacking you this morning. I trust you Greeks; you are good people. I didn’t want you to get annihilated because I didn’t speak up for what’s right.”
Carly didn’t have time to respond before another girl came over to us. “Megan! I wondered if I would see you here. Hi Carly.”
“Hey.”
“Um, Hi Julie, What’s going on?”
“There’s a few people I want you to meet.” She pulled me up and led me off.
I waved back to Carly, but I wasn’t sure she noticed. She seemed preoccupied with her hoodie and her ipod that I hoped didn't have Apollo's Greatest Harp Hits on it.
