Literature Text

Lucky lived in quite solitude, except for the occasional visitor, for several years until a boy with frosted hair blew into her garden.

“Look at this mess you’ve made! I shall never be able to give these clovers out!” She stood with her arms folded across her chest. She had been picking clovers all that day and was about to start on that patch before the boy flew in and crushed them.

“I haven’t been practicing that for very long.”

“Oh, a new immortal. Just a few days?”

“Uh, yeah. Immortal?”

Lucky rolled her eyes. She looked up at the Moon which was just starting to peek out as the sun was setting. “Really? You couldn’t have told him? I have to.” She sighed and rolled her eyes again. “The Immortals. We can’t die like the humans can. The Moon must have chosen you for something, but it probably isn’t that time yet. I’ve been waiting almost two hundred years and I still can’t leave this bloody island.”

“Ah, I see. You look good for two hundred.”

“Don’t mock me boy. Now come, we can talk more over tea inside.” She picked up her basket at headed towards a small little house. “Well, are you coming or not?”

“Sure.” The boy ran up to her. “I’m Jack Frost.”

She held out her hand and he shook it. “Most people call me ‘The Leprechaun’ but you can call me Lucky.”

Jack and Lucky became good friends. Jack would go off from time to time and tell Lucky about the world she was missing. Until, one day, Jack stopped coming. Lucky was heartbroken and for the first time in almost three hundred years, the Moon spoke to her.
