Literature Text

A golden boy fell from the sky on a golden cloud. She wasn’t sure what to think of him, but there was something about him that intrigued her. It was probably all the gold.

He collapsed on the ground next to her.

Lucky could hear the Moon. He didn’t really speak, but she could understand him. This is my son, Sandy. He’s been overworking himself lately. He needs somewhere to rest on every full moon and I think it would be best under your care. Be patient, he can be a bit of a handful.

Lucky was shocked; she was getting a bigger job! She carefully took the golden boy inside and laid him on the couch. She nursed him back to health. When he first awoke, she was kneeling next to him and had pushed some hair off his face, when he grabbed her hand.

“I don’t mean you any harm.” He sat up to face her. “Be careful; you aren’t fully healed yet.”

A few images popped about his head: himself, sleeping child, and the moon.

“You guard the children as they sleep?” He nodded. She squealed with glee. “You must be here to make me one. Finally it is my turn.” She hugged him tightly and she released her grip, she saw him shake his head. “What?”

He showed a picture of a paper and a quill. She handed him some and he wrote:
I am deeply sadden sweet one, but that is not the case. I think my brother may be stirring, so I have been guarding the children even fiercer lately.

Lucky was disappointed. “Oh, but please, at least tell me why you cannot speak.”

He scribbled a bit more:
It’s part of my curse. I am all the dreams, and yet I cannot speak. My brother is all the fears, but he was so noisy! My friends and I thought he was gone, but you can never be so sure.

“Your friends, the Guardians?” Sandy nodded. “What about Frost?” She hardly ever thought about him, but she had to know if he’d been made a Guardian first.

I have met him on occasion, but he has not been chosen.

Lucky was relieved, but she knew Jack would make a great guardian someday.

I must be on my way.  I may have overstayed my chance to refresh, but I would be most happy if I could come back near the next full moon and rest a few days.

“That would be quite fine.” They smiled at each other and Lucky showed him out. She watched him float away on his golden cloud. Near every full moon for two hundred years, Sandy came to see her. And one night, she welcomed to her bed.
